3 Things to Know Before You Design Your Website
This blog post is a little different. Instead of showing you examples of websites we love, we’re going back to the beginning — before you even open your design platform.
Because here’s the truth: too many business owners start building their websites without thinking about what they actually want it to do. They dive into templates, fonts and photos, but skip the part that matters most — the strategy.
So today we’re sharing the three things you need to know before you even start designing your website.
But hang on, if you prefer to watch our video on this, see this below!
IF NOT, THEN CARRY ON!
1. Know why you’re building it
This might sound obvious, but it’s often the step people skip.
Why are you building this website? What is it supposed to achieve?
Think of your website as your virtual assistant. It’s there to help your business grow — not just sit online looking pretty. Maybe you want to build your email list, attract new leads, showcase your portfolio, or sell products.
Choose one or two goals max, and build with those in mind.
When you know your “why,” every design decision becomes easier — your layout, your calls to action, even your copy.
If you skip this step, you’re basically shooting in the dark (and hoping your ideal clients somehow find you).
2. Make sure it’s easy to update
Your business will grow, evolve, and change — which means your website will too. New photos, new products, new services, new events… all of it.
So here’s the question: how easy is it for you to make those updates?
If every little change requires calling a developer or watching three YouTube tutorials, it’s going to slow you down.
We recommend choosing platforms like Squarespace or Shopify because they’re simple, flexible, and easy to manage as your business evolves. We love teaching our clients how to make quick updates themselves — no coding required.
Your time is valuable, and your website shouldn’t eat into it.

3. Have a plan to get eyes on it
Once your site is live, the work doesn’t stop there.
A website isn’t a “set and forget” project — it’s an ongoing tool for growth.
The question is: how are you going to bring people to it?
You could write blog posts, create podcasts, record videos, or share your work on social media. You could even pin your portfolio on Pinterest (we’re big fans of that one).
What matters most is that it feels authentic to you — something you can do consistently and actually enjoy.
Because “build it and they will come” is officially retired.
Final Thoughts
Your website is one of the most powerful tools in your business, but it only works when you treat it like part of your strategy — not just a pretty placeholder.
So before you start designing, grab a notebook (or a glass of something inspiring) and jot down:
Why am I building this?
How will I keep it updated?
How will people find it?
Once you have those answers, then it’s time to design.
